1980 seemed to catch everyone off guard...
Volcano's are supposed to smoke and oooooze up Lava
that runs like rivers down the Mt.sides..
Yet.. everywhere else in the NW you see the remains of
the true nature of Volcanoes..
Southern Oregon has a National Park named "Crater Lake"
as if a large pure lake was trapped inside a bowl..
HA! Obviously, a Mountian blew it's top!
Just to the west is "Paulina Crater" where a mountian
side is pure black obsidian and three lakes flow out of the
crater as pools...
*Look around the skyline on an "un-clouded day" and Portland
can clearly count 5 or more Volcano's as large as Saint Helens!
Mount Hood at 11,500 ft
Mount Adams at 14,300ft
Mount Rainer at 14,700
Mount Jefferson 10,000 ft
and the 3 sisters 9,000+
Add- Mount Shasta to the south and Mount Baker to the north..
and you begin to get the picture<G>
