I almost forgot! Went camping with the Ranger Kids on district ranger kid day. Had mom's and dads along too. The cicadas (A.K.A. 17 yr. locusts) were buzzing and all over the place. Cdr. Paul grabbed one and said, "I've heard you can eat these things." Paul's a geologist by trade and knows all about rocks and bugs. He got his mess kit and put some butter in it and the cicada. It sizzled for a minute. Couldn't turn it over cuz the legs were stickin' up and it wouldn't lay anyway but on its back. He said, "I don't know what part you're supposed to eat, though." He bit off the front end and quickly spit it out. "That's not what you're supposed to eat!" He turned what was left around and bit off the back end (abdomen?)--about the size of a jelly bean. He smiled and said "That's it!" Just then, little Nathan showed up with a quart pickle jar full of them. We got some more butter and put it in the skillet and dumped them in. They were fluttering all over the skillet but too tightly grouped to open their wings and fly. (I don't think they're very strong or coordinated anyway--sort of like fireflys. They don't live long as winged bugs--just long enough to find a mate.) Most of us tried one or two. There wasn't much to them. Kind of expected them to be crunchy, but they weren't. They just sort of dissolved into nothing in your mouth. Mostly, they tasted like butter. (We cooked them in butter.) I think my wife was the only one who didn't eat one. John the Baptist would have been unimpressed though--we didn't have any honey to go with them. -Cdr. D Perich
