As for the claims of the oppressed: The people who now call themselves the Palestinians have no history other than what is being invented by their current leaders. There is no record of previous leaders before Arafat. There was no monetary system and no record of any laws or statutes or customs. They have no written history and no folklore handed down from previous generations. Arafat made a speech a couple of years ago in which he claimed he had fond memories of growing up as a boy in Palestine. It has been proven that he grew up in Egypt and went to school there. Why is that? While Arabs have always been there, they were almost always a minority of the population, second to the Jews. More Arabs started migrating to the area at the same time the Jews did over the last couple of centuries. In fact, they were migrating there because Jews were providing jobs that weren't available in their own countries. On the day the nation of Israel declared its independence, they were attacked by 7 Arab nations. Israel prevailed. The Palestinian refugee camps weren't created by Israel pushing Arabs out, they were created by the Arab leadership telling them to leave because they would be killed by the Jews if they didn't. The Jews had no intention of killing them. They begged them to stay. Some did. The Arab leadership wanted to continue the fight to drive Israel into the Mediterranean Sea as they tried to in 1948. They couldn't do that if too many of their own were living peacefully with the Jews. Most of the Arabs were new to the area anyway...why didn't they go back to the countries they came from? The camps create a dynamic force opposed to Israel. They create an imbalance that is useful for making a claim to the land. The truth is that the Jews were in the majority in the areas called Israel and Palestine for all but 20 or 30 of the last 2000 years. (This is beside the fact that there were very few people of any faith there in the 19th century.) If you had traveled to the area in 1900 and asked an Arab person there what the Palestinians were like, he would have responded that they were dirty infidels. Back then, everybody thought the Jews were the Palestinians since they were in the majority and the Arabs there felt no connection to the land. In fact, it was pretty much that way up until 1967. By then, Israel was establishing its own identity and casting off the "Palestinian" label. They changed the name of their largest newspaper, the Palestinian Post, to the Jerusalem Post. That was about the time that Yassir Arafat co-opted the Palestinian name and applied it to his own people. The media portray Israel as the big country oppressing the tiny Palestinian population with no land and no where to go. The fact is that Israel is a tiny free democracy surrounded by 22 oppressive Arab nations.
