*puts on official District Staff cap*
Greetings,
Over the past few days I've been kicking around and solidifying an idea
regarding the status of "official" district websites for Royal Rangers
and what their purpose should be. From this, I see that there is a need
for District Webmasters/Public Relations Coordinators to team up in an
informal council to standardise what exactly should be in district
websites, and award designations to district websites that reach certain
levels of standards. I've given this idea an official name of the Royal
Rangers Internet Consortium, or RRIC (pronounce it "Rick"). As a body
RRIC would be responsible for drafting content guidelines for the
members to follow in order to give the casual visitor the same type of
information whether they visited the New Jersey Royal Rangers website or
the New Mexico Royal Rangers website.
As of now, I, being an Army of One, have come up with a general set of
guidelines that is a start for what I would hope would be a
comprehensive set of guidelines for the building and maintenance of
district websites. Once a website meets all of the guidelines for a
particular level, it is certified as being RRIC x.0 compliant, much like
companies work toward ISO certification, this would be a goal for
districts to aim for.
As of now, a RRIC 1.0-compliant web site would have the following
information:
-Royal Rangers Network banner on top of every page (Much like you see on
top of Major league sports websites, allowing easy access to other
district websites)
-District Staff information (with photos of staff members as well as
e-mail contact)
-Regularly updated District News
-Full District Calendar
-Information on District events in detail
-Dedicated page to FCF Chapter
-Useful Royal Rangers Links Page
-National Office RSS newsfeed (Yes, a pipe dream at the moment, but if
there's a better idea to get news from Springfield into the hands of
individual commanders, let me know)
RRIC 2.0-compliant websites would expand on this to include:
-Sectional Commander contact information
-Dedicated pages for document downloads
-Dedicated pages to Ranger of the Year
-Dedicated page for Tier 1/2 RRDM staff to assist in customization of
program for district needs
-Detailed Royal Rangers Links page
Finally, RRIC 3.0-compliant websites would go all out, including the
following:
-Detailed History of Royal Rangers in the District
-Patch Reference
-Pow Wow records (i.e. who won, etc. as much as records allows)
-Detailed and Categorized Outpost listing
-Extensive Royal Rangers/Camping Links page
Of course, since I'm the only member of RRIC, this is all I have, but
if there is enough enthusiasm for this, the guidelines could be expanded
and clarified.
I know the biggest question you may have after reading this (after, how
can I or my district Public Relations Coordinator join the RRIC?) would
be "So, how are you going to get Springfield's approval for this?" At
this time, I'm not looking for official approval because at this stage
it is an informal discussion group. However, I would like RRIC to become
officially recognized and mandated by the National office because this
is in their best interest to promote continuity of the public display of
the ministry. Of course, if they are willing to toss out the bureaucracy
and give an official blessing outright, I'd be thrilled.
As of now, there is an ongoing discussion of RRIC on rangerforums (Link:
http://www.rangerforums.com/viewtopic.php?t=2814 ) and I invite anyone
here to join in the discussion, especially Public Relations/Webmasters
in order to get the formal points nailed down.
