Here is s sociologist Margaret Poloma's examination of the Assemblies of God That I looked up: http://www3.uakron.edu/sociology/AoGPastors02.pdf It's a rather lengthy article. It's full of opinions, references, "ibids" and sociology talk. Here's a quote from it: "Although an important catalyst in the development of all world religions, charisma is usually quenched in favor of the patterned and predictable institutional features of social life." Here's my interpretation of the quote: The church is born in the Spirit, but we put people in charge of ministries who need to have control over what they do and what they're responsible for. They can't control the Holy Spirit, so they control what they can. There's a delicate balance between working at what you can control and being a representative of someone you have no control over. How do you develop and run a "Decade of Harvest" that is different from any other decade when God is unchanging? Do we end up trying to put God in a box or at least to make Him predictable or maybe "operable"? We're in need of a revival. Not a revival with success defined by bodily and vocal manifestations that appear to be controlled by a spirit not our own, but a revival that changes people's life direction. Not one that simply displays cravings for God, but a top/down one, imposed by God, that results in God's glorification through the realization of our righteousness. I know what Isaiah 64:6 says about our righteousness, though->"filthy rags". For me, the goal is the Great Commission and humility, or at least, my striving toward that goal, filthy rags and all.
