Research-master "Sociology and Social Research"

Interuniversity Center for Social Science Theory and
Methodology
Utrecht University, Netherlands

A new Research-master program "Sociology and Social
Research" will start 
on September 1, 2004 at the Department of Sociology of
Utrecht 
University. The program offers structured and
systematic training in 
theoretically and methodologically advanced research
in the field of 
sociology and the social sciences in general.

The target group of students consists of promising
students with a 
Bachelor's degree or an equivalent period of three
years of 
undergraduate study and qualifications that justify
the expectation of 
successful completion of the program in due time. The
program is taught 
in English.

Students from outside the Netherlands are explicitly
encouraged to 
apply. Admission to the program is selective. The
program benefits from 
special funds of Utrecht University. Various stipends
are available for 
talented applicants.

Full-time PhD studentships

The Centre for Social Research in Health and Health
Care of the 
University of Nottingham the brings together
researchers from a range of 
disciplines to carry out interdisciplinary research
into the delivery 
and experience of health care, in the context of
current developments in 
health policy and the associated restructuring of
education for health 
professionals. Researchers associated with the Centre
are drawn from a 
wide range of disciplines and subject areas, including
Sociology, Health 
Policy, Nursing, Education, Pharmacy and Community
Health Sciences 
(including General Practice, Community Psychiatry and
Ageing and

Successful applicants will undertake doctoral research
under the joint 
supervision staff drawn from at least two of the
collaborating Schools 
(Sociology & Social Policy; Nursing; Education;
Pharmacy; Community 
Health Sciences). They will be based in the School of
one of their 
supervisors. This will normally be the School which
reflects their own 
disciplinary /subject background. However, they will
also be encouraged 
participate in the full range of Centre activities,
including Centre 
seminars and workshops, and in relevant activities in
partner Schools. 
An individualised research training programme will be
devised for each 
student with an emphasis on moving beyond their home
discipline.

Full tuition fee scholarships will be offered to one
full-time 
international research student and to one full-time
European Union 
(non-UK) research student registering in September
-October 2004.

2004-2005 Postdoctoral Fellowship in Modern Southeast
Asian Studies

The Weatherhead East Asian Institute at Columbia
University invites 
applications for its 2004-2005 Postdoctoral Fellowship
in Modern 
Southeast Asian Studies. Candidates from all social
science disciplines, 
including history, are welcome to apply. The
fellowship will cover a 10- 
or 12-month period beginning July 1, 2004 or September
1, 2004.  The 
Fellow will devote half time to his or her own
research and will teach 
one course per semester. The stipend for 2004-2005 is
$40,000, plus 
benefits.

ELIGIBILITY
Applicants must have completed all Ph.D. degree
requirements (completed 
and filed the dissertation) between July 2001 and July
2004. Applicants 
must have completed their Ph.D. in a social science
discipline, 
including history, working on modern Southeast Asia.
Applications from 
individuals who hold or have held regular faculty
positions will not be 
considered.

The School of Philosophy intends to offer up to four
studentships for
suitably qualified candidates accepted for full-time
or part-time
postgraduate taught (MA) or research (PhD/MPhil)
degree programmes in
the School. The
awards which are tenable from September, 2004, are to
the value of
�7000 plus full fees. PhD awards are for one year in
the first
instance, renewal being subject to satisfactory
progress. The School
operates a professional training and development
scheme for
postgraduates: as part of this scheme, successful
applicants are given
the opportunity to undertake teaching, which is paid
at an hourly rate.

With over 25 staff, the School of Philosophy is one of
the largest in
the country, and has an active graduate school
offering taught MAs in
Philosophy, Metaphysics, Philosophy of Religion,
History and
Philosophy of Science, and Health Care Ethics as well
as research
supervision in all major areas of Philosophy and
History and
Philosophy of Science. Within its Philosophy section,

particularly strong in Metaphysics, and is especially
