SPICE - Zentrum fr Marine Tropenkologie (ZMT)
PhD Studentships in Coral Reef Ecology / Marine ScienceScience for the Protection of Indonesian Coastal Marine Ecosystems (SPICE) is a German-Indonesian programme with support by the German Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF) fostering collaborative research in tropical marine ecosystems, their resources and their vulnerability to environmental and climate change.
Within SPICE, research groups from the Alfred-Wegener-Institute for Polar and Marine Research (AWI), University of Bremen (UFT-FB2), the Centre for Tropical Marine Ecology (ZMT) and Hasanuddin University (UNHAS) carry out research on Coral Reef Ecosystems and Resources. The objectives are to understand the environmental, ecological, social and economic issues related to the structure, functioning and use of reef ecosystems in South Sulawesi. The Cluster is based in Makassar (Indonesia), and is coordinated by ZMT and UNHAS. AWI, UFT-FB2, and ZMT invite applications for the following positions:
PhD Position in Coral Reef Ecology (Ref. ZMT-CRE)
PhD Position in Marine Biology (Ref. ZMT-MB)
PhD Position in Plankton Ecology (Ref. AWI-PE)
PhD Position in Population Genetics (Ref. UFT-FB2-PG)Tasks: The task of the reef ecology student will be to assess the supply of terrigenous and oceanic materials to the reef benthos, and its uptake and metabolism by suspension feeders. He/she will assist in coral reef surveys and carry out field and laboratory experiments on selected species. The task of the marine biology student will be to assist in the development of integrated mariculture systems of commercially important species. Field and lab experiments will be carried out to determine growth and metabolism of algae and invertebrates in single-species and integrated systems built around fish cages. The task of the plankton ecology student will be to study the plankton dynamics in coastal waters and assist in the development of plankton rearing techniques for mariculture using kreisel tanks. The task of the population genetics student is the assessment of the genetic population structure of coral reef fishes important in aquarium trade to reveal connectivity of popula tions. The students will participate in cruises and will work interactively, with scientists and students of AWI, ZMT, UFT-FB2 and UNHAS. Further information on the positions is available at the ZMT website (http://www.zmt-bremen.de)
Qualifications and experience required: Dynamic and independent candidates with a recent MSc or equivalent in marine science/molecular genetics or related fields are encouraged to apply. We are seeking persons with a solid record of achievement demonstrating relevant research and technical experience, problem solving capabilities, and the ability to work effectively within a multicultural team in a tropical setting.
The positions are to be filled by 1 June 2004. AWI, UFT-FB2 and ZMT are equal opportunity employers. Contracts will be according to German salary scale (BAT IIa/2) for max. 3 years. Individuals must be able to carry out physical work including lifting heavy loads (e.g. dive tanks), and be apt to live and work in the wet tropics.
The first two years of work will be based mainly in Makassar, Indonesia; the last year in Bremerhaven/Bremen. The population genetics study will be carried out at the University of Bremen, but regular sampling in Indonesia is required.
Please send your application, Ref. code, CV and two letters of reference to
SPICE-Cluster 1 Coral Reefs, Centre for Tropical Marine Ecology, Fahrenheitstr. 6, D-28359 Bremen, Germany
Review of applications will begin 27 February 2004 and continue until position is filled.
We thank all applicants for their interest. Only those selected for an interview will be contacted.
