Carnival to educate outsiders on Adat Perpatih
SEREMBAN - A carnival celebrating Negeri Sembilan's Adat Perpatih is the best platform to teach elements of the practice to outsiders, its Menteri Besar Tan Sri Mohamed Isa Abdul Samad said.
He said the carnival, jointly organised by the state and television channel, TV3, would help create a deeper understanding and dispel negative perceptions most outsiders had towards the age-old custom.
"Adat Perpatih is a good practice. If not, it would not have lasted until now since it was first practised 650 years ago," he told reporters after launching the week-long carnival at the Seremban Municipal Council field here Monday.
Various activities involving Adat Perpatih customs will be on show including the installation of the Datuk Undang Luak (chieftain), weddings and funerals.
On Negeri Sembilan Yang DiPertuan Besar Tuanku Ja'afar's call for the creation of Adat Perpatih clubs in state secondary schools, Mohd Isa said the decision would be left to the Education Department.
"It is a good suggestion and it should be given due consideration by the Education Department in order to increase student's knowledge of the custom," Mohamed Isa said.
Tuanku Ja'afar had proposed this when launching a seminar on Adat Perpatih on Thursday.
He also suggested institutes of higher learning include the custom as an elective subject which should nevertheless be compulsory for students from Negeri Sembilan.
In conjunction with the carnival, the Terminal One shopping complex here recorded an entry into The Malaysia Book of Records when its staff created the biggest betel leaf chest (tepak sirih) measuring 8.51 m long, 3.66 m wide and 3.81 m high.
The RM35,000 silver and gold polystrene chest took 15 staff 21 days to complete.
