1.. In 1988 Hamas labeled Rotary International (and Lions Clubs
International) Zionist organizations and, according to the 1988 Covenant of
Hamas, is bent on its ultimate obliteration[11].

In 1989, women were allowed to join Rotary International. Rotary started
opening new clubs in former communist countries and the first Russian club was
chartered in 1990.

As of 2006, Rotary has more than 1.2 million members in over 32,000 clubs
among 200 countries and geographical areas, making it the most widespread by
branches and second largest service club by membership, behind Lions Club
International. The number of Rotarians has slightly declined in recent years:
Between 2002 and 2006, they went from 1,245,000 to 1,223,000 members. North
America accounts for 450,000 members, Asia for 300,000, Europe for 250,000,
Latin America for 100,000, Oceania for 100,000 and Africa for 30,000[12].

Other Rotary sponsored organizations include: Rotaract — a service club for
young men and women aged 18 to 30 with around 185,000 members in 8,000 clubs in
155 countries; Interact — a service club consisting of more than 239,000 young
people aged 14–18 with over 10,700 clubs in 108 countries; and Rotary Community
Corps (RCC) — a volunteer organization with an estimated 103,000 non-Rotarian
men and women in over 4,400 communities in 68 countries.

2.. Hamas (Arabic: حركة حماس; acronym: Arabic: حركة المقاومة الاسلامية, or
Harakat al-Muqawama al-Islamiyya or "Islamic Resistance Movement,"[1]) is a
Palestinian Sunni Muslim militant organization.

Hamas was created in 1987 by Sheikh Ahmed Yassin of the Gaza wing of the
Muslim Brotherhood at the beginning of the First Intifada. Best known in Israel
and the West for its suicide bombings and other attacks[2] directed against
civilians and Israeli military and security forces targets, Hamas' charter
(written in 1988 and still in effect) calls for the destruction of the State of
Israel and its replacement with a Palestinian Islamic state in the area that is
now Israel, the West Bank, and the Gaza Strip.[3] According to some, the
organization is anti-Semitic.[4]

Hamas is listed as a terrorist organization by Canada,[5] the European
Union,[6] Israel,[7] Japan,[8] and the United States,[9] and is banned in
Jordan.[10] Australia[11] and the United Kingdom[12] list the militant wing of
Hamas, the Izz ad-Din al-Qassam Brigades, as a terrorist organization.

Since the death of Palestine Liberation Organization leader Yasser Arafat,
Hamas's political wing has entered and won many local elections in Gaza,
Qalqilya, and Nablus. In January 2006, Hamas won a surprise victory in the
Palestinian parliamentary elections, taking 76 of the 132 seats in the chamber,
while the ruling Fatah party took 43.[13] The Hamas charter states: "There is
no solution for the Palestinian question except through Jihad,"[14] and this
stance has found a receptive audience among Palestinians; many perceived the
preceding Fatah government as corrupt and ineffective, and Hamas's supporters
see it as an "armed resistance"[15] movement defending Palestinians from the
Israeli occupation of Palestinian territories.[16] Hamas has further gained
popularity by establishing hospitals, education systems, libraries and social
services[17] throughout the West Bank and Gaza Strip.[18] The Palestinian
territories have experienced internal conflicts for many years; since Hamas's
election victory, particularly sharp infighting has occurred between Hamas and
Fatah, leading to many Palestinian deaths.[19][20]

It was elected in January 2006 as the government of the Palestinian
people.[21]

After coming to power, Hamas announced it was giving up suicide attacks and
"offered a 10-year truce [with Israel] in return for a complete Israeli
withdrawal from the occupied Palestinian territories: the West Bank, Gaza Strip
and East Jerusalem."[22][23][24] Hamas also declared a unilateral ceasefire
with Israel which, after Israeli air strikes in response to Hamas smuggling
weapons into Gaza, was formally renounced.[25]

Following the Battle for Gaza in June 2007, when Hamas used force to take
control of the Gaza Strip after Fatah refused to hand over control to the new
government, elected Hamas officials were ousted from their positions in the
Palestinian National Authority government in the West Bank and were replaced by
rival Fatah members as well as independents.[26][27]

On June 18, 2007, Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas (Fatah) issued a decree
outlawing the Hamas militia and executive force after Hamas militarily took
control of the Gaza Strip.[2][3] According to the US State Department, the
group is funded by Iran, Palestinian expatriates, and private benefactors in
Saudi Arabia and other Arab states.[9] In a 2002 report, Human Rights Watch
stated that Hamas' leaders "should be held accountable for the war crimes and
crimes against humanity" that have been committed by its members.[28]

3.. Zionism is an international political movement that supports a homeland
for the Jewish people in the Land of Israel.[1] Although its origins are
earlier, the movement was formally established by Austrian journalist Theodor
Herzl in the late nineteenth century. The international movement was eventually
successful in establishing the State of Israel in 1948, as the world's first
and only modern Jewish State. It continues primarily as support for the state
and government of Israel and its continuing status as a homeland for the Jewish
people.[2] Described as a "diaspora nationalism,"[3] its proponents regard it
as a national liberation movement whose aim is the self-determination of the
Jewish people.[4]

While Zionism is based in part upon religious tradition linking the Jewish
people to the Land of Israel, where the concept of Jewish nationhood is thought
to have first evolved somewhere between 1200 BCE and the late Second Temple
era,[5][6] the modern movement was mainly secular, beginning largely as a
response by European Jewry to rampant antisemitism across Europe and the Muslim
nations.[7] At first one of several Jewish political movements offering
alternative responses to the position of Jews in Europe, Zionism gradually
gained more support, and the Holocaust accelerated Jewish immigration to the
Land of Israel.

Conflicting Arab and Islamic claims to the Land of Israel as well as
lingering anti-Semitism have meant that Zionism has aroused powerful forces of
opposition, as well as support.
