As the Dutch needed gold to purchase textiles that were traded for pepper in West Sumatra, it was decided to exploit the mines using European know-how and personnel. After several disappointing attempts between 1671 and 1687, it was decided to abandon the project, which had failed to generate a profit due to a combination of unfavourable geological conditions, labour constraints, and logistic problems. The mine was subsequently leased to a local ruler. Apart from the official records and a few recent works, there are two first-hand accounts of the operation, by the Germans Elias Hesse (1658-1689) and Johann Wilhelm Vogel (1657-1723). This article focuses on the latter work, which is more informative than Hesse's as Vogel spent a much longer period in the Sumatra. Vogel had been trained as a mining assayer in Gotha, but decided leave for the > Netherlands to enter the service of the VOC, in search of adventure. After having demonstrated his skills, he was assigned to the Sumatran gold mines in Salido, but he was also compelled to double as a soldier in several campaigns against local rebellions. In his publication, Vogel elaborates on crops, animals, markets, weights and measures, and local people as well as military expeditions and problems with English rival traders. His positive assessment of the profitability of the Salido mines was at odds with the unfavourable views of other observers, and may have been motivated by hopes of furthering his career in Europe.
