Wassalam, Malik Abdullah I was in the small town of Pariaman in the island of Sumatera since September 7 and left the town back to Jakarta only 10 days ago. Yesterday afternoon around 5:30pm, I received a phone call about the earthquake in Pariaman. In the last two months, there was a quake measured around 6.0 on the Richter Scale (RS) followed by after shocks for almost a week. The quake however left only minor damages around the surrounding area of Pariaman. The quake yesterday was a powerful quake, 7.6 and the epicenter is only less than 25 miles away. Many houses collapsed, roads are damaged and impassable due to land erosion, fallen trees and rolling boulders from the hill along the road. Most damages is in Padang, the largest city in the West Sumatera Province. Many 2 - 3 stories building mostly used for shops and living quarters collapsed, 2 hotels in downtown area received major damages. Most sadly, there were many under those buildings were buried alive. A school with 30 students collapsed; only 11 were evacuated so far and 4 of them found dead. Thank God, Tina's mother of 90 year old and lives in Pariaman is doing fine, so are all Tina's brother and sister and their families in Padang. As I said, the damage is heavy and many lost their lives. Those who survive may not have roof over their head for a long time. If you can, please help them by sending your contributions to the victims of the Pariaman Quake 2009.
