Rasanya Pemerintah
perlu memberikan klarifikasi.
Kebetulan saya penggemar berat mi instan.

Marts pull noodles on Taiwan sickness alert

Monday, October 11, 2010

Two leading supermarket chains
have stopped selling Indomie instant noodles after Taiwan authorities found
banned preservatives in the Indonesian product.

The Centre for Food Safety has been testing the noodles
and will follow up the incident
with the importing company and dealers.

Its Hong Kong importer said
the noodles in Taiwan
may have been brought in illegally.

While some people said
they will buy other brands,
Indonesian domestic helpers said
they will keep eating the noodles
because they taste good and are cheap.

Taiwan authorities announced
the recall of Indomie instant noodles
on Friday
after two forbidden preservatives,
methyl p-hydroxybenzoate and benzoic acid,
were found.

The preservatives
are allowed only in cosmetics.

They have been banned for use in food
in Taiwan, Canada and Europe.

If consumed,
the preservatives cause vomiting.

Furthermore,
if they are taken for long periods
or in substantial amounts,
they may cause metabolic acidosis -
a condition due to too much acid.

ParknShop and Wellcome
have removed all Indomie products
from the shelves of their supermarkets.

The Indomie importer,
Fok Hing (HK) Trading,
said the noodles meet
the food safety standards of Hong Kong
and the World Health Organization,
citing a June quality examination
that did not find banned preservatives.

"The Indomie noodles
are safe to eat
and they entered the Hong Kong market
via legal import channels," it said.

"The poisoned products found in Taiwan
are suspected
of being imported in illegal ways."

An Indonesian supermarket,
East-Southern Cuisine Express
in Causeway Bay,
said in a notice in Chinese
that its Indomie noodles
are not smuggled goods and are safe.

A package of five bags
of Indomie instant noodles
costs about HK$10
while other brands cost
from HK$15 to HK$20.

Indomie gained popularity in Hong Kong
after an advertisement
showed little boys dancing
and flying after eating a bowl of the noodles.
