Semua nilai-nilai demokratis sebagai way of life, tidak sekedar sebagai
masalah prosedural semata, benar-benar memerlukan komitmen para pendukungnya
manapun datangnya. Bangsa Indonesia amat beruntung memiliki tokoh teladan
seperti Bung Hatta, pribadi nurani bagi seluruh anak negeri.

Alhamdulillah, dan terimakasih kepada semuanya.

8Tocqueville noted the American zeal for change and connected it with the
restless search for the ideal and the profusion of opportunities to achieve
that ideal. He saw the significance of the interaction of democracy and
religion and anticipated the denominational efflorescence so characteristic
of American life. (Ensiklopedi mericana, s.v. Democracy in America).

of'L#e [New York, 1951], h. 91.

10There is a profound problem with modern secularism and liberalism, namely
that it is only a negative good, in the sense that all it can do is "keep
fanaticism at bay." That ini itself is no small accomplishment, but it can
only provide a framework for diversity and tolerance, not the ideals and
values a society needs to bring about true pluralism. The second great
danger facing pluralism is that we could gravitate toward an empty and
procedural liberalism far removed from religiously grounded truth, in which
case the American experiment would be over, and a new revolution would be
required. The institutions and behavior of the American experiment simply
cannot exist without the religiously grounded truths asserted by the
founders. The challenge for American democracy today is to find a way to
answer Aristotle's question regarding how to order our social life within
the context of a constitutional order premised on certain declared truths.
We are not sure if this is possible. If the American experiment fails, it
will have sobering implications for democratic pluralism throughout the
world. (Prosiding dari Conference on Pluralism and Its Cultural Expressions
[diponsori oleh The Rockefeller Foundation dan the Aga Khan Trust for
Culture], Bellagio, Italia, November 10-12 1992, hh. 17-18).

11The democratic way of life rests firmly upon the assumption that means
must be consonant with ends. It is this rule which, when practiced, emanates
as democratic behavior and constructs a pattern of democratic morality.
(Smith dan Lindeman, op. tit., h. 100).

12Persons striving to adapt themselves to the democratic way of life are
required to discipline to one variety of unity, namely unity which is
achieved through the creative use of diversity. A society which is by
affirmation democratic is expected to provide and protect a wide range of
diversities. (Smith and Lindeman, op. cit., h. 91)

13The majority's responsibility is to conduct an experiment under the
watchful eye of an alert and critical minority. When majorities arrogate
themselves the right to disregard minorities they become tyrannical. An
intolerant majority, swayed by passion or by fear, might become the means by
which democracies lose their iberties. (Smith dan Lindeman, op. cit., h.
97).

14Persons dedicated to the democratic way of life are capable of moving in
the direction of that goal if they are prepared to accept and live according
to the rule of partial functioning of ideals. Perfectionism and democracy
are imcompatibles. (Smith dan Lindeman, op. cit., h. 96).

15Democratization is an ongoing process, and one that is becoming
increasingly irreversible. (Dikutip oleh Chen Wen-Tsung dan Richard R.
Vuylsteke, "Taiwan's Democratization Part of the World Trend", 2 seri, dalam
Jakarta Post, 9 dan 10 Juni 1989).

16 ... in general, democracies are often unruly, but they are rarely
unstable.:While it is true that people may march, shout, confront, and be
disorderly, a look at history shows that in complex and development
societies, democratic governments are very stable. Just as violent social
revolution never produce democracies, democracies never produce violent
social revolutions. (Chen dan Vuylsteke, op. cit.).

17Only when the forms (as well as the contents) of human relations can be
changed swiftly and easily can there be a strong society. And if there is
danger in too much change, there is equal danger in too much rigidity. (H.G.
Duncan, Symbols in Society, Oxford, 1972, h.37).

18... we talk about democratization as a change of Regime, ... we mean
specifically the submission of central authoritative offices to political
competition, and clear lines of distinction between party and state. (Chen
dan Vuylsteke, op. cit.).
