dedicated intellectuals
Kompas, which is the largest and most respected national daily newspaper,
granted in June awards to five 2011 most dedicated intellectuals which have
written regularly for the daily. One of them is a Fulbright program alumn,
i.e., Mochtar Naim. He conducted research at the University of Michigan in
2003 under the sponsorship of the Fulbright program.
Mochtar pursued most of his Ph.D. program in Sociology at New York University
but, because of the deterioriating relationship between Indonesia and the U.S.
in the late 60-s, he relocated to the University of Singapore and successfully
defended the dissertation there.
He has contributed to the development of social sciences in Indonesia being
Director of the influential nationwide Social Sciences Research Training Center
at Hasanuddin University; in addition, he was member of the team to establish
the Faculty of Letters and Social Sciences, Andalas University at his home
province in West Sumatera. He was also member of the West Sumatera Regional
Representative Council.
One which made him strong is the encouragement from his spouse who told him to
"Go on, Dad. Fight!" One day prior to the award granting, he wrote in Kompas
a quite strong message entitled "The old wine in the new bottle" elaborating
his opinion that democracy in Indonesia is still skin deep.
