It comes from developers themselves and it's marked as whishlist ;-)- @KillerKiwi: read-write for others is a chance, but my guess is choosing an owner for the directory would be much more appropriate. I'd just present a drop-down with root/www-data/<username> on top, and the rest of users in following.

A sysadmin may want the folder to have www-data or root permissions on the folder.
