I'm also fond of API modules. Now that we have maven/ivy/OSGi at production quality, managing multiple jars with dependencies is a rational approach to componentization.

IMHO having the key abstractions clearly in one place makes it quicker
to learn a code base and allows downstream developers to import an API

jar, though.
