Having a scripting language is exactly what could get me started on development. I'd suggest tacking on Python, since it's already being used in this capacity in several other projects, the most relevant probably being the GIMP. To tell you the truth, the prospect of having to code stuff in C is daunting enough that I simply wouldn't get started. It's certainly not that it's more difficult as a programming language, but it DOES require 5-10 times as many lines of code to get the same functionality as it would in Python or a similar language, and that's not just 5-10 times as much time spent typing but thinking and debugging as well. What's really needed to get more people to contribute is a fast return on investment, and towards that goal I think a scripting language would work wonders.
