Thanks for the explanation. Is there any way to reset the 'Camera
Default' to its original state (before any user changes were made with
'Save Settings as Camera Default') besides manually changing the
settings and resaving a camera default?

'Camera Default' will revert to the settings you may have saved for
your camera. At any time you can select 'Save Settings as Camera
Default', and that will be the base of your adjustments when you open
images for the first time. I personally prefer to add a bit of
denoising/sharpening, and usually another color profile.
