Hi all,
I'm new to Razor and this list, so I'll try to tread lightly.
Today I installed Perl 5.8, the newest SpamAssassin as well as Razor v2.
Things worked fine, but the introduction of Razor on our mailserver seemed to
impose quite a noticeable load to the system.
I tried the following:
$ for a in `seq 1 100`; do echo test | mail csl; done
Send one hundred email to myself. Before the system grinded to a near halt, I
managed to get uptime. The load was around 16!
After around 15 minutes of grinding and "Out of memory: Killing SpamAssassin"
console messages, I was able to log in as root from the console.
Uptime gave me a 10-minute average load of about 100. No email were
delivered, because the processes were all auto killed.
I must admit that although I'm impressed by both SpamAssassin and Razor, the
load imposed by them is far from neglegtible, although I rarely receive 100
email in one instant.
My question is naturally: Is this what to expect? Would it be possible to
tune Razor (w/SpamAssassin) with renice to make things go more smoothly with
regards to load?
Here is some information on our system:
$ uname -a
Linux ares.sublevel3.org 2.4.7 #1 SMP Wed Jul 25 05:28:45 CEST 2001 i686 unknown
$ free -m
total used free shared buffers cached
Mem: 501 141 360 0 3 69
-/+ buffers/cache: 68 433
Swap: 258 124 134
The system runs two 400MHz Intel Pentium II CPUs.
Note that the server runs a lot of services (sendmail, apache w/php, sybase, sshd),
although the processes are mostly asleep.
If anyone could give me some hints or guidelines on this load issue, I'd be
glad.
Also, if this message does not belong on this list, let me know and I'll
shamefully turn to the right one. :)
Regards,
