Javier,

You sent that to me in and I have used it in the past.
We did find one particular bad connection that way and I was thankful you sent
it to me.
I may need to do that again. Thanks for the reminder.

Jim,

The first thing to know is if all your workstation are connecting at the speed
they are supposed to connect; if you see differences between workstation it
might indicate issues with the network that need to be addressed first.
A while back I developed a standalone application that creates files on the fly
of whatever size you want and loads and unloads to and from the network to the
local workstation and times the process; I sent a version to several board
members and I am sure I still have it on my computer. It has been very helpful
to me in isolating workstations with issues which tend to be either a failing
or improperly configures network card, bad wiring or router switch issues. One
workstation in particular that had very slow connecting speed was discovered to
have part of the wiring coming to it to be coiled over a fluorescent light and
bad outlet connections.; once we corrected that situation the issue went away.

Javier,

When we first started using the compiled application, we did put the forms and
reports in the application and set it up as you mentioned.
But we also wanted the flexibility you mentioned because I am constantly
updating forms/reports or creating new forms and reports.
So we changed and now bring forms and reports up as needed.

I am not an IT person and we depend on an outside IT company. When you said,
“depending on the network” what factors of the network would present this kind
of slow processing?
Going from 1 – 2 seconds to 8 seconds for a form to come up is a big
difference. I also get a “not responding” statement quite often though it is
really working.

Jim,

As I understand it, the fastest approach would include compiling the
forms/reports in the application and then install the application on every
workstation and just have the database reside on the server. I choose to keep
the forms and reports not included in the application and keep the application
and database on the server. While the performance is not as good, it is plenty
fast (depending on your network) and it gives me the ability to update
forms/reports on the fly on a live database and the next time the user open the
form/report, the new version is used…can’t beat the flexibility this approach
allows.

Subject: [RBASE-L] - speed in form coming up

We use the last version of RBASE 9.5 and we use a compiled application drawing
our data from the server.
The forms and reports are not included in the compiled application.

Many of our forms come up using the on key press forms that work great.
Once we double click on the on key press form, the actual editing form comes up.
If I use this process on my local drive, the editing form comes up quickly (1 –
2 seconds).
When using the process on the server, it takes upwards of 8 seconds for the
editing form to come up.
I know including the forms and reports in the application is supposed to be
faster but I did not think it would be that big a difference.
Are there other areas I can look at or suggest to the IT company we use?
