Without knowing all details, such as example, syntax,,etc., I suggest to verify the CHARacter settings of the CONNected database.

After CONNecting the database, type SHOW CHAR at the R> prompt, and then make sure that all looks as it should.

Hope that provides you with some blue's clues ...
