Thank you so much, Albert, that was so nice of you. I will definitely keep
watching this Forum, even though I haven’t a clue what much of the discourse
means.

I love the idea of “passing it along”, so I will concentrate on not focusing on
myself so much and seeing what I can do to help some other people.

Cathy,

It is often the case that those lurking on the server (including me) will learn
something from another’s question and answer session. Never even think of
hesitating to post a question. We are very fortunate to have this most helpful
site provided by RBTI. Some of us learned virtually everything we know from
this site and its predecessors — dating back to 1984 in my case. I, among many
others here, consider it our sworn duty to pass on any knowledge we may have to
newcomers. It is pay back time for us.

Thanks, Steve. I did disconnect before packing (mainly because I’ve not

Re your SECOND part…. THANK YOU! THANK YOU! THANK YOU! YOU’RE RIGHT!!

My Desktop shortcut to Explorer (to copy files) goes to C:\RBTI\RBG76\DATA and
that was the directory that I used to connect to my databases before my
computer crashed and I had to purchase upgrade to re-install to my new
computer.

IT NEVER OCCURRED TO ME that I forgot to change my desktop shortcut to the NEW
directory.

C:\RBTI\RBG95_32\DATA.

AND THERE my DATABASES WERE in Explorer under the RBG95-32 directory … WITH THE
CHANGES in Date Modified, Date last Saved, size correctly modified!

So I have been backing up the WRONG FILES ALL THIS TIME! I am correcting this
immediately. I would have been devastated to learn that NONE of my back-ups
were backing up ANY of my changes.

I can’t thank you, Razzak, and the others here enough who have taken your time
to help me. I really appreciate it.. it means a lot to me. I just recovered
from a year’s treatments for throat cancer, and my body is still adjusting to
getting ‘back to normal’. So my working on my database I’ve been updating for
decades now really helps keep me feeling more “normal”. I am just so sorry that
my knowledge is so minimal that I can’t participate in helping others here.

Cathy,

Perhaps you may have figured this out, but Larry left out re-connecting the
database after setting multi off. Pack will not take place with database
disconnected.

#3 - R> Disconnect

#4 - R> Set Multi Off

#4a R> Connect DBname

#5 - R> Pack

#6 - R> Dir *.RB?

Remember to disconnect after packing and set Multi On:

Disconnect

Set Multi On

Connect DBname

I am somewhat suspicious that you are seeing a duplicate but original files
lurking in your machine, but the program is accessing same files in a different
folder or even subfolder. You might try starting your application, exit to DB
Explorer and check what database and path is shown at the bottom left for
Current Folder. Your other option would be, assuming you have a desktop icon
for your application, would be to right click on the application icon and click
on properties. The database path will be indicated in the Start In box.

Thanks so much, Larry. That was interesting to check, and does give me comfort
to feel I have some control over solving a problem. I love finding out new
things about a program’s problem that I can understand.

I performed your tasks below. Unfortunately, the ‘time’ only showed a 3 min
difference in r:base between the time I listed the database there and the time
I packed, then rechecked.

But the pack result DID show row changes in Forms, Sys Reports, Categ, Videos,
Ratev, couple more… total changes of maybe 230 or so.

The file sizes of .rb2, rb3 and .rb4 DID REDUCE in size. However, when I
exited to re-copy the new packed database, Explorer still shows the same dates
and file sizes as were in all previous several months.

So those results at least tells me that R:Base IS making changes and, since I
haven’t noticed any data loss so far, I’m hoping that means it’s just a glitch
in either Explorer or Windows, etc.

Thanks again for your help and Happy New Year.

Cathy,

IF you really want to confirm date, time and file size changes here is a sure
method.

Make certain that you have a current backup of your database.

#1 - exit to the R> prompt

#2 - R> dir *.RB?

make not fo the date. time and file sizes

#3 - R> Disconnect

#4 - R> Set Multi Off

#5 - R> Pack

#6 - R> Dir *.RB?

make note of the date, time and file sizes - they should have changed

Reconnect to your database

Hope this helps and gives you comfort.

Larry

The file sizes not changing is what concerns me most. I have not been
creating new databases or tables, but regularly edit the data and create and/or
edit reports….but still no file size change (or date change) at all.

Hopefully, since I don’t seem to be losing my changed data, the static file
sizes are not affecting the integrity of the database. But it would really
ease my mind if I could find out how to fix it.

The date/time is last connection time, not the time you disconnected, I think.

I don’t think you need to change the dates. When you disconnect and reconnect,
the date/time will be updated to the time of connection.

File sizes, on the other hand, should change as you manipulate the data and the
database files are saved.

Thank you, Buddy, for taking the time to respond. I am the only user so no one
else in the database ever. I’m not sure what you mean by R:Base possibly
considering the database as being out of sync, but I’ve had no problems
accessing the database, making changes, etc., then having the changes (ones
I’ve checked) still there after I’ve exited, updated the dates, then
re-accessed. I do check my back-up drive periodically to make sure that all 4
of the data files are copied after I’ve forced a date change.

Because I do manually update the dates and copy the files every couple of days,
that should accomplish the same end result as your schedule task suggestion –
it just takes me a few seconds each time (even if it is annoying to have to do
this). That is a good thing, because I would have no idea how to create a
schedule task. My tech guy set up Acronic True Image in the separate back-up
hard drive, and I have periodically have problems with that working properly.

I guess I just wanted to be assured that my database is still ok with my manual
updating, especially since the file sizes do not change at all when I update
them.

I believe the date will change when everyone is disconnected from the
database. Also I would be careful about forcing a new date because R:Base may
see this as the database being out of SYNC.

The auto backup looking at dates may not backup up all 4 database rx files.
I would suggest using something like a schedule task that would start R:Base
and then copy all 4 files to a backup area. I did this in the past. I would
copy the database files at noon (limited activity) and then at 5:00pm and then
the normal daily backup at 11:00pm

Subject: [RBASE-L] - One last question, if possible

I hope it’s ok if I ask one more question that has been driving me crazy (as an
end user, also the buyer of R:Base). I was so happy to have my only other main
R:Base problem fixed by Razzak so quickly and easily.

When I last upgraded to R:Base Extreme 9.5(32), the file Attributes suddenly
stopped changing, i.e., the date modified never changes, and RB1 through RB4
never changes size (no matter how many rows I add or changes I make).

Because I have auto back-up drive that backs up changes only, it will not
back-up my R:Base data files unless I do it manually. I found a program that
will automatically update the date changes to current (if I mark and select
those each time), but it does NOT change the size of any of the RB1 through RB4
files. My data always seems to be there, but I’m worried that the file sizes
are static.

Thank you. Cathy
