As long as you don't go to the Enterprise version of 10.5, you will convert your 6.5 database to version 10.5 but you will still be able to connect to the database from 6.5. If you buy the Enterprise version, then the database extension is changed to RX* and cannot be connected to with non-enterprise versions.
