Doug,

I agree and like using temp tables and views.

Most of these temp tables and views are created in one procedure, which is executed when the application is started.

Advantage: All  temp tables / views are concentrated in one procedure and always available troughout the application.

Disadvantage: If the database is disconnected you have to re-run the procedure.

I have enjoyed the sunshine. In this time of the year there are a lot of geese (1000's ) from the North and Russia spending the winter here. They produce a lot of noise.

Wish you a merry Christmas

Tony, I often use temp tables during processing.
A(nother) quick method to create an empty table is:
PROJECT TEMPORARY Table1 FROM Table2 USING ALL WHERE LIMIT = 0

Or if you only need certain columns, USING collist WHERE LIMIT = 0

If the table structure should change in the future, I don't have to crawl through all the code looking for the table definitions. The projected temp table structure will always be current.

Enjoy the sunshine.

James,

Sorry for not replying. However the sun was shining after days with a lot of rain. So I took my bike and went to the local river (The IJssel in Holland) to get some fresh air.

Jan was right with autonum.

What I sometimes do with (temp) tables, is create the table with RBdefine and then unload the structure. Then you are sure everything is in the proper order.

Thanks to Tony and Jan. I seldom use the auto num so all new to me.

Jim,

Yes. The AUTONUM is issued after the table is created and before you insert data.

    Tony,

So after you create the table but before adding rows you use the
code you mentioned instead of the alter table command?

I saw the syntax you mentioned but was not sure if I used the
    alter command.

What is the proper syntax for creating a column within a
temp table as an auto numbered column?
