Thanks for you quick response.  You're going to think I've lost my mind.  I 
explained it backwards I want to convert a text to a date.

vDate is TEXT and
vServiceDate is DATE
set var vServiceDate = (.vDate)

SET VAR vServiceDate TEXT = NULL
SET VAR vServiceDate = (CTXT(.vDate))

That's all there is to it!
