I would experiment. Print a single letter in a small space. Try things. 

We sent unprintable codes as text through a serial port and printed double wide 
labels one at a time. Thousands. We barcode labeled all manufacturing equipment 
at US and Canada facilities for Rubbermaid, United Technologies and Chrysler. 

Hardware and software options have improved generations since 30 years ago. 

You can do this.
