I am looking at something similar but using windows server and synology device using a iscsi connection. I currently have the drives inside the server using a raid controller card with 4gb memory. It does speed up things.

I am looking a the Synology DS 920+ with 4GB memory, 4 – 4TB drives and 1TB NVME M.3 drive for cache. As I understand, the SSD cache makes a big difference when using databases. I have not yet contacted Synology to get their recommendation on the optimal setup for databases. At this time, seems like it might be a better option than a server.
