Got it:
Rows of data are displayed in an Enhanced DBGrid, the column of interest
to capture to the clipboard is Item Code.
In Variables for the form, I define vItem = Item to automatically
capture the Item Code into a variable regardless of which column I click
in theDB Grid.
I locate a Variable Edit for vItem on the form, component ID is
cidvItem; it gets populated with the current row Item Code.
In an On DBGridCellClick EEP, I have: PROPERTY cidvItem COPYTOCLIPBOARD
'True'.
I also placed the VariableEdit "behind" the DB grid so user doesn't even
see it or have a chance to muck around with it; also set the variable
edit to Read Only.
Voila!

So at this point it look like a two step process.
A possible alternative to the first step is to define a variable
expression, vItem = Item, display vItem in a variable edit control
and then use PROPERTY <Component ID> COPYTOCLIPBOARD 'TRUE' in an
on-click EEP in the DBgrid.
I placed a variable edit for vItem on the form and it displays the
item code of the focused row (good) but but the PROPERTY did not copy
it to the clipboard.
Back to the drawing board.
