I use pretty much the same approach. I have a startup file that has all the setting and then calls a login form. The login name determines the user access privileges for the various modules and also assigns view only or edit privileges. Many of the forms have field that only display for user with the proper level and other just see a blacked out field. This very useful when fields such as those based on hourly rates are present; you definitely do not want every employee seen what other employees’ rates are. In the old days we used to say -you cannot have a foolproof system because fools are too smart, so, I don’t want users having access or jacking with any of the settings which the could do in a CFG file. I used to have an option to do this at one time and only created issues. I do have an option that requires a special password that allows me to change setting within the application as needed but end user shave no access to it. My startup file is compiled in the application and I hardly ever change it since just about all the code (except for the login and user logging) is within forms and not part of the startup file. Ever. Anywhere. I have no clue where/if they are installed, nor where they are. And to this day it has never presented a problem in any of my installations. To me it was one of the best enhancements ever, that you can basically ignore those CFG files if you want to. Need to add a user? Give them the desktop icon that points to the network RBase install and you're done. Do they have/need a CFG? I've never assigned one to a new user. I'm not sure how RBase handles it, but I don't care because it works wonderfully. 100% of my commands, like the ones you list Doug, are in the startup file. That way if you want to change anything, you change one program. You don't run around and change/copy over new CFG files for every user. I never use "name" anymore, I use NetUser. Note that the user Guide states: "The settings may be set within the R:BASE configuration file. However, the settings are best set in a startup file before connecting to the database. For example: ..." Why are the settings best set in a startup file? Shouldn't default settings be established in the CFG file and modified only if necessary?
