I guess it's an obvious thing to do but it didn't occur to me until later yesterday: change the clickable images on the form to text buttons.
Lo and behold: no crashes - at least not straight away as has happened before. Yippee! I'll try it as is for a few days and if it's still not crashing I'll add the images back as BMPs again one by one and see what happens then.
