Thanks Bill,

Checked and only Rbase.dat connects.  Rbase.cfg does have 
"scratch on". Since my 6.1a app can use "set scratch" 
successfully on this computer and the 6.5+ app can't, I'll have to 
assume it has something to do with the version and this particular 
computer, I guess. (The interesting Q is why won't the app run with 
scratch pointing at a particular dir??)  But I can live with that.

What I really need to know is why I get the "can't create temporary 
file" error. Maybe it's only an issue at start up and is able to create 
$$$ afterwards??? Would anyone know how to check? Or will the 
app just bomb?
