DOS based Application Express files cannot be read by the Windows
Application Express module. You have three options for your code:

1. Purchase a copy of R:BASE for DOS 6.5++ and use it just to make changes
to your application. You can run the DOS and Windows versions
simultaneously on your database.

2. Re-create your menus in RBWin Application Express.

3. Quit using Application Express and learn the full syntax and have all
the flexibility that is not available in the Application Express designer.

Regarding potential bugs in your database and applications during the
upgrade - they have been discussed many times on this list - and you may
want to search the archives for more info - but some things to watch out
for are:

New reserved words - if you used them in table or column or view names,
you'll need to re-name them

The standard quote setting is single - while the double works fine, it's not
industry standard and may pose problems when you want to use new features
like ODBC connections.

Ok - there is way too much - you should just come on to the conference this
year and we'll set you up in a special R:Clinic session for conversion tips
and tricks...

Subject: [RBASE-L] - Win App Developer

Hi,

I'm new to RBASE Windows and I recently purchased an upgrade to RB 65++ and
am converting a complicated RB 45++ application.

Most things have gone fine. But, I have questions that I cannot find help
with a problem I have in HELP or the documentation.

I converted the data and applications to RB 65++ for Windows. I used the
Application Developer in 45++ to develop the application and wrote several
other programs that can be executed from the menu system in Application
developer.

I can see and run the application and its sub programs fine with no errors
found so far, but will likely need to make changes to the application
developer. I find no way to change an application short of redesigning it
in Windows version or abandoning the Developer and Editing and CODELOCKing
the files. The old file endings were APP, API, and APX. Windows apparently
uses APW for Windows and I found in the documentation that the Developer
stores special information in the .APW file. Is there a way to get the Win
Developer convert this app to windows fully? If not is there a workaround
to get it to be able to modify this application, such as rename the .API
file, but I assume the files are different. Would the new RBASE convert
this. If so, How? Is there a workaround to cause RBase Windows to edit and
keep maintained a former 45++ DOS Program developed in Developer.

Also, since this was a "bug free" application in RB 45++, what is the
likely hood that I will have any problems in RB 65++ for Win? Anything
special I should look out for? By the way, I use good programming practices
and had very few problems with RB in the period I used it from the early 80s
to 1998.

Thanks,
