Perform a reload instead. If anything goes wrong during a pack you are hosed and will have to go to a backup if you have one. A reload will not change the original database and is much much safer.
In fact I never Pack and always use reload even in normal circumstances.

Just happened to me. I PACKed the database to reduce the size below 2GB and was able to get back into the database.
