Just a thought here. I've noticed over the years that these environment issues are problematic because RBase does not check them and report problems when starting or when the RBase SCRATCH setting changes. It would be a nice enhancement to add this funtionality. Getting a message like "Cannot find directory C:\Temp" or "TMP environment variable does not exist" or "SCRATCH directory X:xxx does not exist" would be a very friendly way to let the user know exactly where to look for trouble right away.
