Irwin My standard advise on this is stick to TCPIP network protokoll only. Take away all Netbui and/Or Novell protocoll. For me it solved this issue (even if got few grey hair in the process)

Are you using Rbase for DOS? Are you using a Win XP machine? If your answer to both of these questions is "yes", we have a problem in common. I never experienced slowness, using proper indexes, on pre XP version Windows machines. I was using rbase 6.2 for dos on my Win ME desktop and storing my database on another ME computer, using Microsoft Netwroking. Speed was great. I replaced my desktop with an XP machine (four times faster processor, more memory, etc.) and speed degenerated dramatically. Since 6.2 was not "XP compatible", I upgraded to 6.5++ and there was no improvement. I did the following tests and am of the conclustion that rbase has a flaw that makes it access information over a Microsoft Network slowly in XP, which it didn't have in Win ME: I was using my laptop and my desktop, both Pentium 4 machines, both running Win XP Pro. I copied the Test*.* files (8,195,503 bytes) from one directory to another on the same computer. It took less than 2 seconds. I copied the Test*.* files from one computer to another using Windows Explorer. It took 1:07 minutes I copied the Test*.* files from one computer to another using Windows XP Command Prompt. It took 1:00 minutes I copied the Test*.* files from one computer to another at the R> prompt (DOS6.5++). It took 27:45 minutes. However, #time stopped after 52 seconds. It continued to show the wrong time until exiting and reentering R:Base. I was not connected to any databases. Accessing database information is similiar, but since there are so many variables in accessing data, copying files suffices to demonstrate the problem. Since data/files can be accessed quickly in a DOS window in XP, this demonstrates that R:Base6.5++ is somehow having problems accessing files and data over a network that is in good order. I hope that someone can find a setting or a fix that can solve this problem on XP machines.
