I had a problem a couple of years ago on a Novell network and a Win 2000 workstation. My nightly reload routine stopped working. When I typed the commands by hand everything worked (disconnect, reload....). It turned out that on the particular version of the Novell client I was using had a setting for caching files, so when I disconnected from the database, it didn't actually disconnect for several seconds. When I typed it by hand, I was slow enough that the db was disconnected by the time I got the reload command typed in. The fix to the problem was turning that caching feature off in the Novell client. In my case, the reload just didn't run because I was still connected to the db.
Something you might want to have the client try is to copy the db to his local workstation and give it a try. An R:Base reload on a fast computer can sometimes push data faster than the I/O can keep up with.
