I have had similar experiences with XP pro and various programs. What seemed to help out the most was changing the network provider order.
1. Right click on "my network places". 2. Click on Advanced-Advanced settings. 3. Click on the "provider order" tab. 4. Under network providers move "microsoft windows network" to the top. For some reason terminal services has priority by default. It seemed to fix my slow opening/printing problems. An IBM ThinkPad, a Dell Latitude, and a Dell PC with a radio link, all running XP Pro, work just fine. Several other PCs, happen to be Dells, running XP Pro are slower than molasses in January. The PC with the radio link runs slowly when connected directly rather than over the radio link. We have not yet come up with a resolution, or even what the problem is, precisely.
