Thanks for the idea.

"POW is a C function.  Since the current rendition of RBase is written
in C, it is a good chance that that is the problem.  I think the EXP
funtion would probably be a candidate, as well as the ^ operator as
in 3 ^ 3 = 27" - from Dennis McGrath

Turned out it was a command a bit before the report which
involved an exponential operator and the user thought the
report had a problem.  Never did figure out what was causing
the error but it turned out to be irrelevant to the report.
Lesson: Don't trust the client's analysis.
