"Hello R:World!" Oops, that's the output of Rafee's test php file..
(From the musical "Oklahoma") Oh, what a beautiful morning, Oh, what a beautiful day, I've got a beautiful feeling, Everything's going my way! Well, in a short short, it will be MY WAY. But first things first: Conference News =============== A record number of attendees (75 plus) made this the super duper rock'n rolling (7th) edition of the R:Base conference. The weather was absolutely beautiful and you can see the inside and outside pictures for yourselves early next week. The MC's, Sami Aaron, David Blocker and Bill Downall did a bang-up job as usual. And so it also goes with the RBTI team. Each time, they outdo themselves but make it look so easy because they have honed this process to perfection. Charlie Parks, this conference's Developer of the Year recipient will take his turn or delegate one of the MC slots next year. Go Charlie! New Products ============ R:WEB Suite, R:Fax, R:Archive, R:Compiler, RBZip, R:Mail 2.5, R:Scope 7.5. Check them all out at http://www.rbase.com. R:WEB Suite - The class was full and after two days, most of us are capable of publishing our first form on the net in about 5 minutes. Caveat: Unless you have Rafee nearby to zip, bang, boom setup php and apache for you, it will take longer <g>... A step-by-step instruction file is being redacted to walk anyone through the setup process with relative ease. R:WEB is truly magical in the way it allows the completely uninitiated to create interactive pages with an R:Base database. The initial learning curve is minimal and results are immediate! From experience, I would advise you to take the class, it's quicker than trying to figure it out yourself. The more you learn, however, the more complex your projects can get, just like what a professional would charge you mega bucks to develop, not to mention for a lot cheaper and with total control. R:Fax is somewhat similar to the Microsoft Shared Fax Driver with a major difference. You control the process and results from within R:Base in a totally automated fashion. R:Archive is a TWAIN capture tool and full Document Management System using an R:Base database. Gotta look into this one! R:Compiler will take an .rba file and convert it to an .exe in a few seconds. Or you can create a dummy .rba which simply launches your application, then convert it. RBZip is a compression utility, RMail 2.5 is a new version and R:Scope 7.5 is a brand new database repair utility with a very friendly windows interface. Not to wish for anyone to ever need this tool, it looks a lot less daunting to use. There are rumors that R:Office is in our future (To Be Announced) :). R:BASE V-8 "Turbo" was officially unveiled by Wayne Erickson. The "big" databases over 2GB were shown by Razzak (3.6GB) and Steve Sweeney (4.9GB). We also saw a conversion from 7.x to 8.0, including the live 8.0 application! For those with technical savvy, Wayne Erickson is still open to suggestions about new data types or size issues. Hurry and let him know your thoughts. Release date TBA. R:Geocaching News ================= When posted, check out the pictures of the team on their "hunting" of geocaches in the area. If it's near a river, should it be called "fishing"? Ben Fogt will have to elaborate on this, but he's very effectively spreading the fever. <g> To me, the conference is like a family reunion. I wonder how I ever got along without it. The interaction between the very and less knowledgeable is extraordinary. Just like on the lists, there are no dumb questions and everyone jumps in to help. Of course, as in the past, infractions to the conference rules of no political, religious or sports references were encouraged to fill the basket for Project Bundle Up. RBTI's double-matching of the funds (we collected $1,300) crowns this conference as a success. I was happy to see all my R:Base friends again and to make new ones. Hope to see everyone again next year, same R:base channel, same R:base place and same R:base month, and in the meantime, see y'all on the R:Base lists! Claudine Robbins
