        Thanks for the commiseration.  Because of what you said below
I retested the eep, that appeared to be sort of working, and it failed.
The process self-destructed after about three trips up and down the tier.
What is really strange is that it worked okay in a much more rigorous test
on Saturday.

        Managed to get the desired effect with computed columns altho the
user has to go to the next row before the display changes.  They can live
with that.
