Dennis: Ad-Aware from Lavasoft is highly rated and very good.
Another program called CWShredder is also useful. The latter has to do with some particularly pernicious spyware called Cool Web Search (thus CWS) and has many, many variations. It has a reputation for being especially difficult to remove from an infected PC. CWShredder can take care of most if not all of this if it has been unknowingly installed on a system. A log at the CWShredder creator's site indicated that it got to be a bit of a war to see who could outdo each other on installing CWS and then trying to remove it from a system using CWShredder.
