Ken,

All the scanners I've worked with have the option (if not the default) to return to your application a decoded scan - just the data, less the start/stop characters, check digits, etc.

For instance, if you look at a Code 39 barcode it starts and stops with an asterisk. The scanner should strip these off and give you just the data contained by the barcode.

Bob, et al;

Appreciate all the good input that I have received from everyone. I have been watching this forum for several years now and it really has powerful input for the developers. That is worth a lot, not only money but time.

My plan is now to go USB. and have ordered a Symbol LS2208 unit.
I do have another question and that is the check digit. Is that a software check or is it a hardware (scanner) check. If it is software how is that done? And assuming the default of Mod 10 is best? I plan to use for this situation (relatively small volume (~10k) library) the format like they are using for one of the larger libraries in the area. This will aid in locating lost volumes. e.g.; If they are using Codabar or Code 39, I will use the same. etc.

Again, thanks for the past assistance and the future.

Ken

I have been converting all my newer scanners to USB. Less hassle than keyboard wedges with PS2. Try Worthdata.com. Unfortunately, the PS2 scanners I have been using never break down. Good luck.

I have been using a ps2 with good results, have not tried USB. Go to SystemID for equipment if needed http://www.systemid.com/index3.asp.

Will be setting up a barcode (7.1) application and need to know what
would be the best choice for the scanner unit attachment. Have a
    choice
of a PS2 connector or USB connector. I can understand how the scan
output would be received by the application using the PS2
    connector, but
how does the application see the results of the scan using the USB
connector? The USB would be the more simpler and cleaner way. The PS2
connector would need some sort of wye (Y) connector to accommodate
    both
    keyboard and scanner.

    Thanks in advance...
