There were some issues with office 2003 SP3, where the advise was to NOT use it unless you fully understood the implications of the service pack. It materially changed the accessibility of some (older) file types by 2003, among other things. I am sure google will reveal enough transitory information on the subject as well as some microsoft published registry settings that will roll back some of the security issues that caused the problems in the first place.
