    "wrapper COM objects" = ActiveX.

Are the Libraries Methods published?  Maybe you have a link to a web site where 
I can look at the documentation.

If they are and their Return Values are of type Variant, then I would have a 
workAround for that.

Also, you should elaborated on what value you are trying to return to RBase.

If Not then are there also published the exported functions of the C++ Dlls?

Then there is the last possibility, as long as it is Twain Compliant, you could 
write your own DLL to control the Scanner.
I did an a very incomplete testbed 9 years ago in VB6, so the Twain Library if 
I remember right would do all the rudimentry things, but the library that comes 
with your scanner is doubtless written directly to address all its' 
capabilities.
