Mike, John and James
thanks for the info
I do not expect any "inner mechanisms" to be published. At present I
just make a mental note that
the "pack password" command has some inpact on my list of grants even
when there are no passwords
defined for any user.
As for the use of owner/user/grant I notice the existence of diverging
opinions. I might be wrong but I get
the impression that the users of owner/user/grant are the minority. If
so - it's sort of funny: when I started
with R:Base, in 1985 or 86, it was for security reasons - anybody could
read a dBase file and the data we
handled had to be safer. We have been using owner/user/grant as far
back as I can remember and I
have never had any problems with that. However, we have never used the
password addition but handled
that in code.
So why does that invisible table grow? Why is there a specific command
to pack passwords? If I was to
modify a system with owner/user/grant to start using user passwords -
would I run into trouble? That is
my concern, not the details of the inner mechanisms.
Best regards
Esbjorn
