----------------------------Following on from my questions about new Vista accounts apparently causing problems I seem to have found a solution in R:Base which, at first, surprised me then, with a little thought, I seem to remember this cropping up before and then forgotten about by me.
On top of that I have some general questions about saving and/or transferring layouts which have come to mind as I have worked through this. Apologies in advance if this turns out to be a long explanation but, hopefully, clarity will result - or, at least, less of a fog. Here goes: I had the original single Vista login - Owner. It had been my intention to create a new login with only user permissions if ever I felt I needed it but, as a single user PC, it seemed a little pointless. Then I read that it was more secure to have a user login to prevent programs installing themselves via the Internet. A couple of weeks ago I took the plunge. I created a new user: ADBB. Then I thought that I wanted all the settings from Owner rather than having to re-create everything in ADBB. I renamed (and I forget the actual sequence) Owner to Temp, then ADBB to Owner, then Temp to ADBB. With hindsight, there must have been a better way but it didn't seem particularly exciting until I looked at where the Vista "user directories" pointed - and most were wrong. I attempted corrections but it was clearly going to be easier to make a note of my settings and re-create them in a new account. I ensured Owner had Admin rights, deleted fully ADBB, created two new accounts - ADBB as a user and the other Admin (obviously with admin rights), then fully deleted the Owner account. Everything seemed fine from then on. I created my desktop and so on. I don't have many other programs installed, Word, a few utilities and, of course, R:Base. Then I found a number of folders with a string of numbers as the owner which I corrected to what I thought was likely - among them ...\RBTI\... - and that was when I noticed the layouts not saving. I put 2 + 2 together... In R:Base I have four users set up: Owner, ADBB, Alastair & Public - I've used then for years. Public is, effectively, read only, ADBB is edit data (no delete) and day-to-day use while Alastair and Owner both have full access and are only used together only if I'm copying from one database to another with two instances of R:Base open. The logins work to (try and) stop me doing something silly by not having full access all the time. (My Vista accounts are now set up on the same principle!) Those of you who are ahead of me might already have spotted where this is going. My computer login used to be Owner but is now ADBB. My R:Base login is still ADBB but - and this is where I'm not sure quite how things happen - I seem to remember that R:Base uses the computer login name rather than the R:Base login name in Sys_Layouts - and the stored layouts would then be under Owner not ADBB. Something made me think about the number of records in Sys_Layouts3 for each table and that, if the computer login is used, there ought only to be one record for each table. So I experimented and deleted all the Sys_Layout3 records for one table and then changed and saved the layout for that same table. Exit R:Base and restart and test: problem gone. The layout was saved as expected. To double check I did the same in another database - no problem again. So, easy solution, if time consuming, delete all saved layouts and re-create them. However, that led me to thinking about a number of tables that are common to all my databases. The layouts need to be the same for all of them but, being lazy, I'd like to set them up in one table and then export/import for the other databases. Then there are also a number of common columns in other tables in each database - it would be useful to be able to apply the same layout to similar columns. For example, all date columns are displayed the same way so need the same width. (It's mainly the width that concerns me so that I can make the best use of the screen.) I think that it used to be possible to load data into Sys_Layouts(n) but the Sys_Data column seems now to be unviewable so I'm not sure if it can still be done. Before I set about deleting and re-creating all my layouts can anybody clarify for me please: Is it possible to unload/load from/to Sys_Layouts3? Can the Sys_Data column be viewed and, if so, can it be edited, for instance, to set the same widths for columns? Does R:Base use the computer login or R:Base login name for the stored layout data? Finally, and just thinking out loud, R:Base clearly has some sort of default for the column widths in the browser based, I presume, on the length of the data and/or the column name. Is there any way to manipulate this outside of the browser's Cell Size button? Maybe some sort of Property command could be possible, eg: PROPERTY Browser [ColumnName] CellSize '50' or, maybe an additional option added to the Data Designer?
