I don't know  what actions would end up locking the entire file. I will
chalk another stroke next to mystery and move on I suppose.

If someone else is connected to the database you could see this error as
R:BASE tries to update file 1 on your way out, assuming the other person
had a  lock in place that prevented your update.

there is no index on the table aside from the automatic one from the
primary key.
