An, of course, you're bound to have archival dbs and code in the old version!

Archival stuff has saved my neck more than once.

It's perfectly safe. On rare occasions, I have gone back to look at the raw old 
data in those tables to see -- for example -- how did we do that lookup in the 
old DOS version, but usually that stuff got converted into the current forms or 
reports, anyway.
