Dan, Thanks for the NIC power save setting tip. I have unexplained DB corruption, on average 3-4 times/year. So far, switches, cabling infrastructure, hubs, nor transaction interruption found to be faulty. An occasional NIC failure or power related issue over the past several years, but mostly have been unable (yet) to discover causation. Let's see how this tip plays out over the year. Yes, a good backup routine in place has mostly taken care of my nightmares!
Thanks again, Brad -----Original Message----- From: [email protected] [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] On Behalf Of Dan Goldberg Sent: Thursday, September 25, 2008 10:29 AM To: RBASE-L Mailing List Subject: [RBASE-L] - Re: Networks I have to agree with Razzak. I used to use the netgear pro-safe switches and my database would get corrupt from time to time(about once every 3-6 months). I switched to 3com switches late last year and have not had one corruption since.... Here are some other things I found over the years to minimize corruption. 1. Turn off power saving on the nics. Go into the nic's properties. 2. Put every switch on an ups. 3. Use a timeout on my apps. 4. Disconnect from the db in the app. 5. Most important. Have a backup plan in place!! Jan, In a multi-user network environment, a bad NIC, poor network wiring, cheap routers/switches and electric surge are the primary cause of data corruption, including SYS_ table(s). You wouldn't see such behavior in a stand-alone environment, when a database is connected on a local machine. You may also need to make sure that all users connected to the same database are in sync as far as the R:BASE version and build is concerned. This is one of the biggest challenge for network administrators and our lovely R:Developers. Hope that gives you some blues clues ... Very Best R:egards, Razzak.
