That was right on, Bill.
I also excluded RSTY*.* , *.RMD and the network \RBTI from scanning (Components|Resident Shield|Manage Exceptions in ver 8) - everything screams again.  RStyle is now instantaneous vs a couple of seconds.
I think it must have been a recent (past summer?) AVG upgrade - maybe from ver 7 to 8.
